Thompson - Heads of Household - 1800 US Federal Census - Robeson County, North Carolina

The second United States Federal Census taken in 1800 lists 16 Thompson heads of household for Robeson County, North Carolina.

I've compiled a list of those 16 Thompson families that includes heads of family, the number of free white males, free white females and slaves.

My known ancestors are William Thompson (first William listed above) and his father Charles Thompson (first Charles listed above).  William's brother, Charles, is also listed (the second Charles on the list).  My fourth great grandfather Harmon Thompson is enumerated in William's household as a male between 10-15 years old.

When comparing the 1800 United States Federal Census to that of 1790 (chart included below) you'll notice there are seven new Thompson Families, Alexander, a second Charles, David, Henry, two additional John Thompsons, M Thompson and Theophilus.

Two Thompsons have now left the County, Nepsy and Reuben Thompson. I've included my chart of the 1790 Federal Census for comparison.

Are you related to one of the above Thompsons?  If so, please leave a comment or send me a message.  I'd love to include your family story in a future blog.  Subscribe to receive each post as it's published.

My goal is to work together, with my fellow Thompson cousins, to untangle the Thompson families above.  A task over the last several months that has proven to be formidable, perplexing and at some times daunting.  Fellow genealogists have been working on this task with very limited success for close to 100 years.

I've found myself unable to sleep some nights, wondering about this Thompson and that.  Which John Thompson married Charles Thompson's daughter? Which William is my 5th great-grandfather, B Swamp or H Swamp?   Was Charles really a reverend?  Is Charles Thompson my William's father?  And why did William only receive 10 shillings in Charles' Will? What's lore and what's fact?  Dizzy yet?  I know I am.

With cousins marrying cousins and families naming their children after their parents and grandparents I can see no conceivable way to sort out this tangle of Thompsons other than to separate them, one strand at a time, to the benefit of all.

Join with me and, together, we'll sort out fact from fiction and grow our family trees.
