Thompson - Heads of Household - 1810 US Federal Census - Robeson County, North Carolina

Next let's review the 1810 United States Federal Census for Robeson County, North Carolina and then later this week we'll begin diving into a few Thompson Wills.  Wills have been a wealth of information regarding the Thompsons.  Often times we've found names of spouses, children, son or daughter-in-laws, slaves, friends and even grandchildren's name.  With the early Censuses only listing the heads of household these Wills are pure genealogy gold.

On the 1810 US Federal Census there are 13 Thompson heads of household listed.  I've included a chart below that lists heads of family, the number of free white males, free white females and slaves.

Thompson Heads of Family

Alr Thompson
Charles Thompson
George Thompson
Jno Thompson
Jno Thompson
Lamuel Thompson
Margaret Thompson
Nile Thompson
Rachel Thompson
Stephen Thompson
Treinegan Thompson
Wm Thompson
Wm Thompson

When comparing the 1810 United States Federal Census to the 1800 Census we see that there are now a few new Thompsons in the County.  Including a younger Alexander, Margaret (Perhaps the same person as M Thompson from the 1800 Census),   Rachel, Stephen Thompson and a younger William.

We also see a few Thompsons no longer reside in the county, namely Henry, one of the three Johns is now gone and one of the older Williams.

My goal is to work together, with my fellow Thompson cousins, to untangle the Thompson families above.  A task over the last several months that has proven to be formidable, perplexing and at some times daunting.  Fellow genealogists have been working on this task with very limited success for close to 100 years.

I've found myself unable to sleep some nights, wondering about this Thompson and that.  Which John Thompson married Charles Thompson's daughter? Which William is my 5th great-grandfather, B Swamp or H Swamp?   Was Charles really a reverend?  Is Charles Thompson my William's father?  And why did William only receive 10 shillings in Charles' Will? What's lore and what's fact?  Dizzy yet?  I know I am.

With cousins marrying cousins and families naming their children after their parents and grandparents I can see no conceivable way to sort out this tangle of Thompsons other than to separate them, one strand at a time, to the benefit of all.

Join with me and, together, we'll sort out fact from fiction and grow our family trees.
